Die Qualität von Motorenölen wird mittels Spezifikationen gemessen. Es gibt die Spezifikationen: API, ATF, ACEA, MIL, CCMC und DIN.

Welche Spezifikationen ein Motorenöl erfüllt, wird anhand motorischer Tests bestimmt.

Spezifikationen werden von nationalen und internationalen Gremien, sowie von großen Autoherstellern (VW, Daimler Chrysler, MAN, Scania LDF, Volvo, Porsche, BMW) entwickelt.
